FAQ

  • Is the Flushable bag the same as a plastic or biodegradable bag?

NO.  Plastic and non-flushable biodegradable bags are NOT flushable.  Plastic bags are not biodegradable for over 1000 years and although using a biodegradable bag is better than plastic, most of them end up in a plastic trash bag in the landfill making that effort worthless.  The Flushable bags are made of Poly Vinyl Alcohol or PVA and are water-soluble.  Once you flush the flushable bags, the agitation and water dissolve the bag completely 100% Biodegradable and the Dog Poop is treated the same as human waste.

  • Can I use the flushable bags to flush cat poop or cat litter?

NO.  Unlike dog poop, cat poop has toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can cause birth defects if a woman comes in contact with it during pregnancy and can also kill some marine animals once distributed back to the waterways.  Water treatment plants do not treat for cat poop.

  • Can I tie the bag closed?

NO.  Tying the bag closed locks air in the bag and keeps it from flushing easily.  A simple twist and fold over is best.  The bag will then unfold once it comes in contact with the water and flush easily.

  • Can I flush more than one bag at a time?

NO.  Never try to flush more than a regular amount of human waste at one time, meaning one bag and one poop at a time.

  • Will the bags clog my toilet or pipes?

NO.  Not under normal usage.  See our tips for proper usage under Flushing Basics
The bags are water-soluble and will begin to soften and disintegrate once flushed. And will not clog or damage pipes.

  • What if I pick up a wet Poop or it’s raining, will the bag fall apart?

NO.  The bags are designed to be able to hold up to a certain amount of water exposure without dissolution or breakage.  Once the bag is discarded into the toilet, it will soften and disintegrate.  We suggest to always use the ‘Fido Bag’ to safely transport the waste to the nearest flushable unit.  The Fido Bag is waterproof and washable.  Remember, you don’t have to carry the bag all the way home, any public restroom or trash can if no flushable unit is available, will do.

  • Can I use the Flushable bags with my Septic System?

YES.  Please refer to our Flushing Basics section on proper Septic Systems Precautions.

  • Are the bags Toxic to me, my children or pets?

NO.  PVA or Poly Vinyl Alcohol is relatively harmless when ingested.  The acute toxicity of PVA is very low and is very poorly absorbed and does not accumulate in the body.  A review of the oral toxicity of PVA preformed by Colorcon, West Point, PA supports its safety.   As with any type of bag, danger precautions must be considered.  Children and pets should be supervised at all times.

  • Can I bury or compost pet waste?

NO.  Composting and burial are not good ideas.  Although it may seem practical, most compost piles don’t reach temperatures sufficient to kill many hazardous pathogens found in dog waste and many pathogens can survive for years in soils and be dangerous to your children and pets.

  • Will the bag dissolve before I can get somewhere to flush it?

No.  The bags were engineered to be durable enough to carry the waste for a safe amount of time allowing you to get to a flushable unit before it starts to dissolve. Once the bags come in contact with water in the toilet, they will begin to soften and allow for easy flushing without clogging pipes. The agitation from the flush will tear the bag apart into small pieces and begin its degradations process. 100% biodegradation and the microorganisms end of life will take aprox. 90 days. We recommend using the Fido Bag to safely and sanitarily carry your dog’s waste to a safe place to flush..
